GUM HEALTH CARE

Periodontics at First Choice Dental

Periodontics focuses on the health of your gums, bone, and the structures that support your teeth.

Our periodontal specialists provide advanced care for gum disease, soft tissue concerns, dental implants, and surgical periodontal treatment. This helps patients protect their oral health, preserve natural teeth whenever possible, and restore function when replacement is needed. Specialty periodontal care is provided by our Board-Certified periodontists, Dr. Bob Baima and Dr. Andrea Geffin, at our Middleton and Madison Downtown locations.

Specialty Periodontal Care

Periodontal treatment goes beyond managing gum disease alone. It includes surgical, regenerative, and implant-related care designed to restore and support long-term oral health.

Our periodontists work closely with restorative dentists and specialists throughout First Choice Dental to provide coordinated care for both routine and complex cases, allowing patients to access advanced specialty treatment while keeping care connected across the organization.

When Should You See a Periodontist?

Specialty periodontal care may be recommended when gum disease, bone loss, or surgical concerns require more advanced treatment. You may benefit from seeing a periodontist if you are experiencing:

  • Bleeding or swollen gums
  • Gum recession or exposed roots
  • Loose teeth or shifting teeth
  • Advanced gum disease
  • Interest in dental implants
  • Pain while chewing

You can help prevent periodontal disease by brushing twice a day, flossing once per day, eating a balanced diet, and having regular dental checkups.

Periodontal disease is caused by bacteria that live in the plaque and hard deposits on your teeth. These bacteria create toxins that can damage the gums and bone.

In the early stage, called gingivitis, the gums can become red, swollen, and bleed easily. At this stage the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated with a professional teeth cleaning and daily brushing and flossing. In the more advanced stages, called periodontitis, the gums and bone that support the teeth can become seriously damaged; teeth can become loose, fall out, or may have to be extracted by a dentist.

Periodontal disease cannot be cured, only managed. If your dentist diagnoses you with a periodontal disease, treatment may include a periodontal therapy by a dental hygienist, followed by periodontal maintenance in 3-month intervals. More severe cases must be treated surgically.
