GENTLE ROOT CANAL CARE

What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is used to treat infection or damage inside a tooth.

During treatment, the infected tissue inside the tooth is carefully removed, the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed, and the tooth is preserved whenever possible. The goal is to relieve discomfort while helping you keep your natural tooth long-term.

When Is a Root Canal Needed?

A root canal may be recommended when the inside of a tooth becomes infected, inflamed, or damaged. Common signs may include:

  • Persistent tooth pain
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold
  • Swelling or infection
  • Deep decay affecting the nerve
  • A cracked or damaged tooth
  • Infection visible on X-rays, even without symptoms

A root canal either repairs or saves a badly decayed or infected tooth. During the procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.

Our endodontic patients are usually surprised by how uneventful a root canal at First Choice Dental really is. Not getting a root canal when you need one can be harmful to your health and may cause additional problems that will eventually need to be addressed. In other words, the longer you wait, the more your oral health can deteriorate.

Without a root canal, the tissue surrounding the tooth will become infected and abscesses may form. An abscess occurs when the infection spreads all the way past the ends of the roots of the tooth. In addition to an abscess, an infection in the root of a tooth can also cause pain, swelling, bone loss, and drainage problems.

The only alternative is having the tooth extracted and replaced with an implant, bridge, or removable partial denture to restore chewing function and prevent adjacent teeth from shifting. These alternatives are more expensive than a root canal and require more treatment time.

Even with excellent care, some people are simply more prone to deep decay or have anatomical factors that increase risk, so a root canal isn't always avoidable. But consistent hygiene, regular dental visits, and protecting your teeth from trauma meaningfully reduce the odds.
