Join Us for a Luau to Help Fund Epilepsy Research

First Choice Dental is proud to support the eighth annual Lily’s Luau to benefit Lily’s Fund for Epilepsy Research. Lily’s Luau will take place on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 6:30 pm at Union South Varsity Hall, 1308 W. Dayton Street, Madison.

Nearly 700 guests are expected to attend, many in their grass skirts and Hawaiian shirts, and other tropical attire. The luau will feature tropical food, music and an auction.  Tickets are $60. Order tickets online and learn more at www.lilysfund.org or call 608 446-6052.

First Choice Dental dentist David Penwell and his wife Colleen, and their entire family provide volunteer leadership for Lily’s Fund and the annual Luau. Colleen is co-director of the organization, and its Grace Grants are named after their teenage daughter Grace who lives with a severe form of epilepsy.

To date, the all-volunteer organization has raised more than $700,000 to support leading edge epilepsy research at UW Madison. With the money raised, Lily’s Fund has supported 3 research fellowships at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health as well as awarded two $100,000 grants, with a third one to be announced at the luau.  These “Grace Grants,” are competitive grants designed to fund innovative early-stage epilepsy research. As a volunteer-led organization, Lily's Fund invests 100 percent of proceeds from the Luau to advance epilepsy research at UW-Madison.

Lily’s Fund for Epilepsy Research was established in 2006 by Madison family David and Anne Giroux whose daughter Lily lives with epilepsy. When Dave and Colleen Penwell attended the event for the first time and learned of its work, they knew they wanted to be involved. Today the whole First Choice Dental team is proud to get in on the action. Each Thursday the staff sport purple scrubs to raise awareness for epilepsy. Many staff members also attend or volunteer at the Luau.  Lily’s Fund also runs a support group for parents of children with epilepsy, and strives to raise awareness and understanding about the disease through the annual Purple Day, Lily’s Lemonade Stands, and more.
